ROBOTIC UROLOGY @ ANKARA ATATURK HOSPITAL

Professor M. Derya Balbay started Robotic Surgery at Ankara Ataturk Hospital and also in Ankara in February 2009 and ‘’Robotic radical prostatectomy’’ was the first case performed by Professor Balbay. Professor Balbay is a well known Uro-oncologist who was trained at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas (USA) in the field of Uro-oncology. In 2009, Professor Balbay invited Dr. Randy Fagin from Austin, USA who is a very well known robotic radical prostatectomy surgeon to our institution. Dr. Fagin kindly accepted this invitation and visited our department to show his unique technique in performing nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy. Thereafter, Dr. Kevin Zorn from Motreal, Canada visited our department and performed a live case of nerve-sparing robotic prostatectomy and shared his knowledge and experience with us.

Following performing more than 70 cases of robotic radical prostatectomy cases, Professor Balbay invited Professor Peter Wiklund from Stockholm, Sweden who is a very well known robotic surgeon particularly experienced in robotic radical cystectomy and intracorporeal urinary diversion (Studer). Professor Wiklund and his fellow Dr. Martin Jonsson visited our department and Professor Wiklund performed a case of robotic radical cystectomy and intracorporeal Studer urinary diversion. He kindly demonstrated every detail of his technique to all of us. Thereafter, Professor Balbay successfully performed the very fist case of robotic nerve-sparing radical cystectomy with extended pelvic lymph node dissection and intracorporeal Studer urinary diversion in Turkey. Additional cases followed with increasing experience.

Professor Balbay then trained his team including Dr. Ziya Akbulut (Associate Professor of Urology), Dr. Ali Fuat Atmaca (Associate Professor of Urology), Dr. A. Erdem Canda (Associate Professor of Urology), Dr. Serkan Altinova (Associate Professor of Urology), Dr. A. Tunc Ozdemir (Assisstant Professor of Urology) and Dr. M. Fuat Ozcan (Staff Urologist) at Ankara Ataturk Training and Research Hospital.

Currently, his team is capable of performing robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy, robotic partial nephrectomy, robotic pyeloplasty, robotic adrenalectomy and robotic radical nephrectomy.

Between 2009 and 2013, more than 500 cases of robotic urology procedures have been performed by our team and our center is one of the busiest robotic urology centers in Turkey.

Our team has published many international and national papers related with robotic urology in peer reviewed journals, did many robotic urology presentations in international and national meetings and received awards related with robotic urology.

On 28. April. 2012, we organized 1st Ankara Robotic Urology Symposium. Professor Jens Rassweiler, Dr. Georg Schön and Dr. Ali Serdar Gözen were invited international robotic surgeons who participated to our meeting from Germany.

We invite our colleagues and those who are interested in robotic urology to 2nd Ankara Robotic Urology Symposium & Course that will be held on 7-9. June. 2013 at our institution. Dr. John W. Davis from Houston, Texas, USA; Dr. Kevin Zorn from Montreal, Canada and Dr. Ali Serdar Gözen from Heilbronn, Germany are this year’s invited international robotic surgeons who will perform live robotic surgical procedures during our meeting.

We look forward to meeting you at our meeting.

Respectfully,

A. Erdem Canda, MD
Associate Professor of Urology
Secretary of 2nd Ankara Robotic Urology Symposium & Course
